The
Lagos Countdown is an annual New Year's countdown event held at the Bar Beach
in Lagos. The event lasts for 21-23 days and traditionally begins on the 7th or
8th of December and lasts through January 1st of the New Year. The first Lagos
Countdown was held in 2012 as an attempt to drive up tourism and make an event
similar to New Year's events in New York, Sydney, and other major cities, and
in 2013 an estimated 200,000 people celebrated the event during a ten day
period and earned the city about one billion naira.
The
concept was conceived by the Lagos State Governor His Excellency Mr. Babatunde
Raji Fashola SAN. The intent behind the concept was to put Lagos on the map as
one of the fastest growing and emerging mega cities not only in Nigeria, more
so in Africa. so why not celebrate like other staple cities by putting on one
of the biggest and most excitable December celebrations Africa has ever
witnessed.

The
Lagos Countdown is not just about celebrating the end of one year and the
coming of another, more importantly it celebrates culture, language and
promotes commerce especially for more small scale businesses as well as
providing job for locals and business opportunities for most.
The
month of December is a fun filled packed month with activities for everyone,
children and adults, a hub for all to come, be entertained and have a good
time. All activities take place at Modupe Oshikoya Road also known as Bar Beach
in Victoria Island and is free to attend.

Festival
of Lights is the official flag off of the Lagos Countdown, an event whereby the
Governor turns on the lights of the beautifully and intricately decorated Bar
beach stretch. He also takes a tour of the area and is able to interact with the
people. He also makes a speech and he is able to meet the sponsors and get a
glimpse of what is yet to come.
The
Lagos Countdown itself is a concept that starts in the evening of the 31st
December and end the morning of the 1st January.
