[HEALTH] STRAW OVER BOTTLES

When I got to the location of the beat assigned to me, it seems everything has been written about. I kept thinking ‘what health related issues could I possibly find here.’ Then, I saw a student greedily emptying the content of a Fanta bottle down his throat.

This topic came immediately ‘straw over bottles’. I am sure the meaning is clearer now.

My observation was that although most people request for straws, some of them discard them before finishing their drinks. Some, especially the non-teaching staff of the University of Lagos do not even request for straws at all. After questioning him, a man said ‘’straws are for students like you. I get more satisfaction drinking directly from the bottle”

The implication of this is that when you drink directly from bottles, you are not only drinking Fanta or Sprite, but ‘fantagerms’ and ‘spritegerms’. Maybe you should take the time to check the tip of these bottles.  You will find out that most of them are usually laced with dirt, or rusted particles from the covers of such bottles.

If you think you are safe from this because you take plastic drinks alone, you need to know that you are at higher risk. This is so because most of these plastics contain BPA [biphenyl A]. Test results indicated that an average soft drink has concentrations of BPA which is harmful to the body.

BPA interferes with chemotherapy treatments and is toxic. It is also linked to heart disease, diabetes and liver problems.

Whether it is safe to drink from plastics at all is a problem on its own. Complicating things by putting it in your mouth without straws should be avoided.

Now do not panic. There are bottles that are usually made from polyethylene terephthalate [abbreviated to PET or PETE]. Its recycling code is 1 [the number in the centre of the triangle of arrows found on most plastics]. PET is not one of the plastics that one would think has a propensity to cause a problem [Prof. Michael Moore] he is the Chair of Water Quality Research Australia.

The bone of contention here is that straws should be used to reduce health hazards. The notion that it is for sophisticated people should be corrected. One cannot be perfectly careful, but prevention is better than cure. Straws should also be well checked before using. HEALTH IS WEALTH.

Queen Nigeria; A role model for Beauty Pageant in Africa

As much as Pageantry is concerned in Nigeria, though they might be numerous this one stands has a catch to it. The pageant stemmed from the need to express beauty in the Nigerian cultural woman. Olusegun Famodimu, the Chief Executive Officer of Famford Enterprises Limited, said the Nigerian culture is constantly and significantly being eroded by the western community, and efforts are in top gear to revive it through Queen Nigeria, adding that the vision of the pageant was to unveil the concept of Nigerian beauty, untainted by the sparkles of westernization.
The Queen Nigeria project which is designed to raise the standard on the definition of beauty by creating Queen Nigeria, which is purely for the revival and celebration of Nigerian culture from the focal point of a richly packaged beauty pageant celebrating beautiful Nigerian women regardless of tribe, religion and location.

The pageant which will take the form of a reality show in which all the contestants will be hosted in a house while their activities will be broadcast to the world. Viewers and judges will have the opportunity to vote for their Queen Nigeria. The victorious will receive two million naira, stretched over the one year span of her reign, including a car, among other choice benefits and sponsorship to world tourism centres and events. The pageant is open to ladies between the ages of 18 and 25. Registration, said organizers, could be done online at www.queennigeria.org.

This unique pageant seeks to fill the vacuum left by other pageant organizers in Nigeria where concentration is placed on the swimwear session, dresses exposing vital body parts and other anti-cultural elements. The Queen Nigeria pageant involves a cooking competition session, test of cultural intelligence, physical beauty, passion about the society, respect for self, and vastness of the participant on critical issues in the country.
Registration and application which closes  on the 20th October 2014 online
Would still open to people that have not applied and want to be part of the screening process in lagos.

Queen Nigeria 2014 is Beyond Beauty.

[Poem] Okin (Peacock)

Okin

Hers is the kind of beauty that sings of bliss
The kind of perfection that lures to sleep
Lingering on a face that illuminates with a smile
A smile that threatens the night crescent
I have seen her lovely face only once
In a pleasant dream I once was
I have gazed into her heavenly eyes just once
And therein a sentences and words unspoken
Dancing in tango with a stare undefined, untamed
Endless pleasure it said without feelings
Hopeless treasure I felt without speaking

She is my Okin, my queen of subtle beauty
Nature’s magic magnet for the wondering eyes
She carries on her ebony skin the colours of rainbow
With eyes the colour of rose petals
An accurate reflection of dawn’s orange light
Her teeth sparkles like diamonds in a chest of gold
Glitters like stars in the charms of midnight

I have heard her speak only once
With a voice that undulates in the winds like angel’s hymns
Like sonorous crows that wakes China’s dead emperors
And unbinds the mummified pharaohs of Egyptian crypts
I have heard her speak only once
And words like winds hugs my heart in the warmest embrace

She walks like the clever queen from fore-bearers tales
She swaggers with the grace of Juno’s bird
On a stroll along the Olympian quarters of Roman streets
She sleeps with the moon but rises with the sun
She is an apricot in the warm breeze of dawn
And a bright star when the sun stumbles away

Hers is the kind of elegance that writes of love
The kind of excellence that keeps men in line
Hers is the kind of bird of the finest nests
The kind of idol trapped in flashes of human camera
Hers is the kind of beauty that prays in the dark
That the journeying sun never breaks our suspense

BETWEEN SAHARA REPORTERS AND SULCATA ENTERTAINMENT

On the 5th of October 2014, Sahara Reporter posted a story with this headline and content

'Beauty Vs. Brains: Most Beautiful Girl At UNILAG Rewarded With A Brand New Car While The Most Brilliant Debater Gets A Laptop

Damilare Babajide, a 4th year law student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), yesterday took home a brand new car and other unnamed perks after emerging winner of the 2014 Miss UNILAG pageant.
Ms. Babajide’s windfall immediately ignited a debate among students and lecturers, with some criticizing the material rewards bestowed on a so-called beauty queen when the same university hands a mere computer and some cash to winners of its demanding debate contest.

One lecturer, who asked for anonymity, said he was troubled that the car and other gifts to the university’s beauty queen far outstripped the prizes given on September 10 to the winner of the university debate competition. Zainab Olaitan, a 2nd year political science major at UNILAG who won the university’s rigorous academic debate competition, was awarded N100,000 and a laptop computer. UNILAG vice chancellor, Rahman Bello, handed the cash and laptop to the indomitable 18-year-old debater.

The lecturer also noted that last year’s winner of the debate competition, Ms. Mary Adegunloye, received a laptop and N50,000. “I understand that the university management was planning to give the same paltry sum of N50,000 cash prize this year to the winner of the debate, but decided to double the cash prize because of criticisms from some lecturers and student leaders,” said the source.
In addition, he said that pressure was put on the university’s management to give N50,000 each to runners-up in this year’s debate.

Ms. Damilare received her car gift today after emerging Miss UNILAG in a beauty contest organized by the Directorate of Student Affairs (DSA). SaharaReporters could not immediately ascertain the amount of cash and other perks awarded to the beauty queen, but Ms. Damilare told our correspondent in a TV interview that the sum was “encouraging.”
Reacting to the disparity in gifts for the beauty contest and the debate competition, a few students told our correspondent that the relatively small reward for intellectual achievement was likely to affect the academic morale of students on campus.'

To clarify the positions of things, Sulcata Entertainment which is the entertainment company that organized Miss UNILAG Beauty Pageant sent this Blackberry Messenger Broadcast Message :

'URGENT UPDATE:

There has been a conscious attempt directed towards tarnishing and frustrating the efforts of the Entertainment company that organized the just concluded Miss Unilag 2014.
PLS NOTE:: Sulcata Entertainment was responsible for the purchase and delivery of the CAR to the winner Ms Damilare Babajide Uche, a 400level student of Law, University of Lagos.
The D.S.A and other members of the school administration only
1) Gave Sulcata Entertainment the right to organize Miss Unilag 2014.
2) Officially presented the gifts to the winners of the pageant.
The gifts were made possible through the kind gesture of our sponsors who became our back bone.
Finally, Miss Unilag 2014 winner "Damilare Babajide" was rewarded with the star prize of a CAR which was provided by the pageant organisers "SULCATA ENTERTAINMENT" not the University of Lagos Management as against the reports being made by "SaharaReporters". It Is wrong to paint an untrue and unclear picture, making the University seem like it celebrates social activities over educational activities.
Any credible media company should investigate and get facts before making posts. And not just make posts detrimental to a brand for selfish reasons.

Pls Re-Echo ))) let the truth be heard.

From my point of view, I think Sulcata Entertainment should send a press release to Sahara Reporters to clarify this issue. It is only then that Sahara Reporters can rewrite an objective story because the story they published is not objective enough.
